The ACT was Australia’s first state to declare a Reconciliation Day vacation. The ACT Legislative Assembly approved the bill to amend Australia’s Holidays Act. It received tripartisan support. This public holiday marks the anniversary of 1967 Australian Referendum. It marks the start of National Reconciliation Week.
In an Australian referendum that took place 27 May 1967, two amendments to the Australian constitution regarding Indigenous Australians were passed by the Holt government. The amendments received unanimous support from 90.77% and were carried in six States. The amendments amended sections 51(xxvi), 128, and included Aboriginal Australians into the population determinations. The Federal parliament was also empowered to legislate for this particular racial group.
The 1962 amendments didn’t grant Aboriginal citizens voting rights. The amendments also didn’t grant citizenship to Aboriginal persons, since many of the discriminatory laws in federal and state law against Aboriginal people were already repealed in 1967.
